PEARL HARBOR: Survivor recalls epic battle

Like a lot of his fellow sailors on Sunday morning, Dec. 7, 1941, Roger Marron was sleeping when Japanese planes swept in from the open Pacific and roared through Pearl Harbor just before 8.

“The night before, we had a battle of music,” said Marron, 95, of Riverside. “Each ship had its own band.”

Marron wasn’t just recovering from a night of revelry, he had been working. As a naval electrician, he’d been responsible for the sound system for the small stage in the recreation center where the bands played.

“A friend of mine woke me up,” he recalled. “He said, ‘They’re here.’”

Somehow, Marron said, he understood what his friend meant. He jumped out of bed and the two raced outside.

“We could see the ships being torpedoed,” he said. “The Oklahoma got torpedoed and we watched it roll over with all those guys inside of it. We knew a lot of people were dying out there.”

Sailors were leaping from burning ships. Guns fired into the morning sky, trying to hit the attacking planes.

“We were fairly close,” Marron said. “We’re standing there and here came a Japanese torpedo plane, probably from here to that telephone pole,” he said, pointing out the front window of his home to a pole about 150 feet away. “We could see the pilot and he had a big torpedo.”

Marron, who grew up in Riverside, is one of the region’s last Pearl Harbor survivors. He will mark the anniversary at a 10 a.m. ceremony Monday, Dec. 7, at the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Norco. Read More.....

Vigils Honor San Bernardino Victims, including Beloved Teacher

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A number of vigils were held for the victims of Wednesday's San Bernardino massacre, including a 46-year-old mother who loved to teach.

The Boy Scouts and Girls Scouts in Troop 6732 bowed their heads in prayer on Saturday in memory of their teacher Bennetta Bet-Badal, one of 14 people killed in the mass shooting.

The Assyrian American Association of Southern California turned its annual Christmas party into a memorial and fundraiser honoring Bet-Badal, and her husband expressed the family's gratitude during a phone call.

"Thank you from the bottom of our hearts," he said.

Bet-Badal drove an hour and a half every week to teach the Assyrian language to the scouts. Read More.....

2016 Friends of Scouting Campaign Kicked Off

In November we started the California Inland Empire Council Friends of Scouting campaign serving  Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. Friends of Scouting is our annual fund raising campaign helping the Council  deliver a great Scout program to over 24,570 youth and adult volunteer leaders in the Inland Empire.

The photo was taken at Bud’s Tire and Wheel- 15967 Wood Rd. Riverside, CA 92508 during the 2016 Council Shoulder Patch unveiling on Tuesday, Nov. 17th at 10:00am. The annual Friends of Scouting shoulder patch recognition salutes one of the 12 points of the Scout Law or the Scout Oath. The 12 color patch is worn on the scout uniform on the left shoulder. FOS helps Inland Empire Scouts by “Delivering the Promise” of community service, leadership training, self-reliance and the adventure of the great outdoors.

Bud Luppino is the Owner of Bud’s Tire and Wheel, Joe Daniszewski is the Scout Executive/CEO of the California Inland Empire Council Boy Scouts of America.

It is important that you are a TRAINED LEADER

We appreciate ALL of our volunteers in the California Inland Empire Council!  Without you, we could not deliver the excellent program to the 15,000 + youth in our council.  Want to make it better for our youth?  Get trained and make sure your records show that you are trained!  This is how you can do both:

Already completed your training?  Fill out the “ON MY HONOR” Training Report

Need to complete your training?  If a Cub Scout Leader, go online to www.my.scouting.org (online Boy Scout and Venturing Training is coming soon!)

For everyone else, attend a leader specific training held throughout the council. Go to our council website for upcoming training dates. MORE dates will be announced soon!

Show how much you care about your Scouts and be a trained leader.  They all deserve a TRAINED LEADER!!

2016 NYLT Potential Staff

NYLT is one of the best experiences Scouting offers to turn our Scouts into Leaders. Next year the CIEC will be offering two opportunities for our Scouts to participate in this program. But first we need NYLT trained youth and Woodbadge trained adults to help staff the courses. Please reach out to your Troops and Crews and let the qualified individuals know that we are having a Meet & Greet Saturday January 9, 2016 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 350 S Wabash Ave., Redlands, CA 92374 from 1:00-5:00pm.

Here you will meet the key staff and interact with others so we can form the best teams for each course. The courses will be June 13-18 and August 1-6. This is YOUR opportunity to share all the training you have received with all the future leaders in our council.

Fall Fun with Troop 646

Troop 646 of Alta Loma had a "Blast" helping out in October at this year's Old Baldy District Webelosree at Cucaomonga-Guasti Park in Ontario. The Scouts ran an event that had the Webelos looking to the sky to see how high their 2 liter Rocket would go! The Webelos really seemed to enjoy this event and the Scouts had fun running it!

The following weekend, the Scouts took an 11 mile bike ride on the PET, while working on their Map N' Compass Requirement for Rank Advancement. It was a great day and perfect weather for a bike ride and to work on their skills. The Scouts are looking forward to another Bike Ride coming up in the New Year.

Finally, Troop 646 ended the Camping season with a Family Camp Out at Yucaipa Regional Park. Blake P.; the SPL, had requested that the camp out be for all of the families and the Scouts all agreed. Blake's first camp out when he joined Boy Scouts was at Yucaipa R.P. and he wanted his last (Blake turns 18 in January) camp out to be at the same park, only this time, have his whole family there to celebrate!  We had a great turn out, awesome weather, a huge potluck dinner on Saturday night, followed by an excellent Flag Retirement Ceremony led by Blake P.,  ASPL David M., Matthew G., Ivan S. and Matthew's sister, Girl Scout Amaya G. The Ceremony was very moving and many of the families had never seen one before, so it was very special!

Positive Quote & Prayer
-------------------------------

“When you want a thing done, ‘Don’t do it yourself’ is a good motto for Scoutmasters.”

    ~  Baden-Powell

Pearl Harbor Prayer

Gracious Heavenly Father, we humbly gather together in remembrance of the attack on Pearl Harbor on 7 Dec 1941 and the loss of life of so many and the many nightmares of the survivors.

Today, on the anniversary of the attack, we honor the memories of the 2400+ brave Men and Women who gave their lives for us, as well as those who continued to stand in our defense.

We remember the shock of this infamous and unprovoked attack; but we also remember the resolve and courage of a people that knew it must stand and fight for its cherished values.

Let this day be a time of remembrance for all citizens of our nation … to look back to 7 Dec 1941 and recount the sacrifice for the cause of freedom and democracy.

Lord, we look to you for guidance and in a spirit of praise and thanksgiving we acknowledge that you have shed your grace on us.

May we all honor those who have so nobly served, and brought glory to your Holy Name.

Amen
