Cahuilla Lodge Vigil

The Cahuilla Lodge welcomed their final four Vigil Candidates Saturday morning December 22, 2012.  Adam Fassbender, Eric Fassbender, Marc Maloney and Ray Fassbender became Vigil Honor Members in the Cahuilla Lodge Order of the Arrow completing the Lodges 2012 thirteen Vigil Candidates to be inducted.

Our Council Camp Emerson provided a beautiful environment for our candidates with weather in the high teens to low 20”s through the evening.  A peaceful night for solitude and reflection is especially appropriate and will remain in the hearts and minds of our newest Vigil Members, I’m certain, at this special time of year.

The Vigil is the highest honor that can be bestowed an Arrowman in the Order of the Arrow.  It represents the exemplary attitude and commitment of the honor member to their brothers, their community  and the ideals fostered by the scouting program.  The Vigil Member embodies the heart and commitment of the O.A. as set forth and dreamed by our founder, Dr. E. Urner Goodman.

The Cahuilla Lodge extends their congratulations to all of our 2012 Vigil Honor Members.

Tim Purvis, 2012 Adviser to the Chief

A Message from the National Eagle Scout Association

Season’s greetings to all Eagle Scouts!

The national committee and staff of the National Eagle Scout Association wish you and your family all the best during this holiday season.

Plans are well under way for big things next year. NESA will have a significant and exciting exhibit at the 2013 National Scout Jamboree at the Summit Bechtel Reserve near Beckley, West Virginia. The great event will run July 15–24.

NESA@SBR is planning a wide variety of activities during the jamboree. If you'd like to receive updates via text message (occasionally until the jamboree and then more often during the jamboree as we announce VIP visitors and other special events), please text “NESA” to 44264. Customary text charges apply.

We are also having a NESA@SBR patch design competition. Eagle Scouts of all ages can create a design in one of five categories. The submission deadline is Friday, Jan. 4, 2013, by email (.jpg, .png, .gif, or .pdf files) to suggestions@nesajambo2013.org. More details are on the National Eagle Scout Association’s Facebook page.

Pinewood Derby Proving Grounds Event

Racing in a Cub Scout derby is great fun. You'll get to design your racing vehicle, work with a parent to build it, and see it perform on race day. Win or lose, you'll take pride in having done your best. When you race in a Cub Scout derby, you learn craft skills, the rules of fair play, and good sportsmanship—things you will remember all your life.

Pinewood Derby
The pinewood derby is one of the most popular and successful family activities in Cub Scouting. Pinewood derby cars are small wooden models that Cub Scouts make with help from their families. Then they race the cars in competition. The cars are powered by gravity and run down a track. Most packs have a pinewood derby every year. It can be run indoors or outdoors. Every boy can design and build his own "grand prix" car to enter in the race.

The Scout Shops are holding a Pinewood Derby Proving Grounds Event
Anyone wishing to come measure, weigh, and test their car before the
big race can come join us on January 12, 2013.

ScoutHelp Hotline

The Boy Scouts of America is committed to providing support and care to those adults who have been affected by sexual abuse years ago, when they were Scouts. To do this, the National Council has established ScoutHelp?, a help line that can be accessed by calling a toll-free number (855-295-1531) or sending an email to scouthelp@scouting.org.

Please encourage any Scout, former Scout, or Scout family member who suffered past abuse by a Scout leader or adult volunteer to contact ScoutHelp by calling the toll-free number or by sending an email.

All callers will be treated with sensitivity and respectful listening. The calls will be received by a victim assistance coordinator who will assist by providing victims of past sexual abuse within Scouting with:

  • Support and encouragement for past abuse
  • Assistance in finding counseling or other resources near where they live
  • An explanation of how the BSA is able to assist them with the costs of counseling
  • Help in reporting past abuse to the authorities or answering questions regarding the reporting process in general
  • General information concerning the status of the abuser, such as whether the person has an Ineligible Volunteer File, acknowledgement (only) of previous allegations, whether law enforcement was notified, and whether the individual is still in Scouting
  • The BSA’s current Youth Protection program, and how the BSA has strengthened its protection of youth

The victim assistance coordinator cannot:

  • Provide clinical therapy to a caller.
  • Address current abuse issues or matters. Current allegations of abuse should be addressed on a local level to initiate immediate response, including the mandatory reporting to law enforcement and/or child and family services. This help line is intended to provide assistance to those adults who might have suffered abuse in Scouting years ago, when they were youth.
  • Make the report to law enforcement on behalf of the caller.
  • Assist with obtaining financial support for anything other than counseling.
  • Provide detailed information about the alleged abuser, such as the individual’s current whereabouts, names of other victims, or the outcome of any legal matters.
  • Provide copies of IV files.

In connection with responding to these calls, you might receive a request for historical information, such as troop rosters, from a victim assistant coordinator. Such requests do not indicate that legal action has been initiated. In the event that legal action involving your council is pending, you will be advised by someone in the Legal Department.

By addressing these calls in a professional and respectful manner, we will begin to regain the trust that has been placed in the Boy Scouts of America. In addition, we will all need to work together to continually strengthen and improve the child protection policies of the BSA to keep all Scouts safe.

If you need additional information or have questions,
please contact Heidi Steppe at heidi.steppe@Scouting.org or 972-580-2007.
