Welcome to our August 20th, 2012 Monday Memo Northern Tier Leave No Trace training for C.I.E.C Scouters Three Scouters from the council's conservation committee attended the recent Leave No Trace Master Educator training at the Northern Tier high adventure base in Ely Minnesota. Two of the Scouters, Kyle Gonering and Elliott Brooks, attended the course. The third Scouter, Paula Boothe, is C.I.E.C's Outdoor Ethics Advocate and was the lead instructor for the course. The training took place at Northern Tier and was also attended by three members of Northern Tier's staff and a scouter from the Northern Star Council in Minnesota. Northern Tier's lead interpreter, Laura Gehrke, was the co-instructor for the training. Included in the training was two days of classroom lessons on the principles of Leave No Trace and a four day 35 mile trek in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness of the Superior National Forest. During the trek, each participant led a 20 minute lesson on one of the seven Leave No Trace principles and were evaluated on their effectiveness. The entire trek adhered to Leave No Trace practices and “teachable moments” were used throughout the training. Having four members of the Northern Tier staff on the trek provided insight into the operations of one of BSA's three High Adventure bases. Kyle Gonering opened the student lessons with a presentation on “How to Dispose of Waste Properly”. He used examples of WAGBAGS, RESTSTOPS, and proper cat-hole construction. Elliott Brooks led a field exercise on “Leave What You Find” utilizing alternate methods of memorializing artifacts. Through the use of maps, drawings, photographs, and geocacheing, he expressed the alternatives to damaging or removing artifacts from cultural resource sites. BSA has a partnership with Leave No Trace and provides Master Educator courses at various locations including Philmont Scout Reservation and Northern Tier. Contact Paula Boothe towonuni@aol.com for information on upcoming trainings Help Ensure VOS Success By Gathering Accurate Email Addresses We all know that member email collection establishes a vital channel for communication with this group. For the Voice of the Scout program, however, it is the single-most important activity that councils can do now to unlock the potential of true membership engagement. As we gear up for the VOS fall survey cycle, the accurate and widespread collection of email addresses for all parents and members over 14 is a foundational component of the program. In fact, email saturation is so important that it is the Silver level qualifier for VOS in the council’s Journey to Excellence score. While hundreds of thousands of surveys will eventually be sent daily, members can be assured that no one will receive more than one survey every six months. VOS is BSA’s first national engagement program to listen, learn, and act upon member experiences in a targeted, strategic way. The system collects and delivers feedback to councils using the Net Promoter Score approach, which streamlines the delivery of information into a manageable and insightful process. By capturing the experiences of members and volunteer leaders, the goal is to identify, embrace, and surpass expectations of Scouting, so we may continue to positively impact youth to a growing membership. In 2013, the VOS will no longer be optional and will become a standing criterion of measurement along with all other criteria of JTE. To see results from the VOS spring cycle, go to the “Voice of the Scout” section on the www.scouting.org/jte page Announcement Lou Monville, III member of the California Inland Empire Council Executive Board, has been appointed as Chairman of the Nominating Committee for 2013. The members of the Committee are as follows: Robert Camerota, Paul Foster, Stan Morrison, Jim Prior and Kenn Young. The Nominating Committee will have an initial meeting to review and recommend volunteer leadership for the California Inland Empire Council Executive Board for 2013. Any recommendations for prospective Executive Board members should be forwarded to: California Inland Empire Council PO Box 8910 Redlands, CA 92375-2110 Attn: Nominating Committee or email: micbrown@bsamail.org The Annual Meeting will be January 17, 2013 Eagle Scout Court of Honor | Andrew started Scouts in 1st grade and is now a Senior at Elsinore High school. He has accomplished many things in scouting: Andrew has gone through Youth Leadership training to learn skills and apply his knowledge at the troop. He has done many community service hours which include: Elks Lodge Clean-up days, park clean-up, canned food drive for HOPE, graffiti removal on Ortega Highway, various flag ceremonies, recycling cans and bottles to benefit Lake Elsinore Animal Friends, volunteer at the library, and working the summer special needs program, amongst community service. He received the Arrow of Light award with Cubscout Pack 332 as a Webelo scout, and bridged over to Troop 604 in Wildomar in 2006. He has earned a total of 50 merit badges, in which 20 were for his rank of Eagle Scout. In October 2011 Andrew completed his Eagle Project. Andrew's Eagle project, he set-up an informational booth and game at Relay for Life for cancer awareness. His booth was specifically for Inflammatory Breast Cancer and was done in memory of his Aunt Leanne. Andrew made awareness brochures for the community event, as well as making 300 signs for relay walkers to wear. The walkers were able to write a loved ones name "In Honor of" or "In Memory of". He also made awareness posters around the event and had a game for children and participants to play. The game was called "Fishing for a Cure" which involved using a fishing pole to "catch" a fish. Each fish had a fact about Inflammatory Breast Cancer (IBC) on it. Once the participant read the fact, he/she earned a piece of candy. The main focus for an Eagle Project is for the scout to show leadership skills and apply them to his project. Andrew showed his leadership skills through setting up fundraising activities to fund his project, as well as setting up a prep day to get ready for his event in October. Once at the RElay for Life, Andrew applied his leadership skills through guiding scouts, friends, and family to set-up the booth, signs, and fishing game. He also had them hand out fliers and was sure a member of the team was on the track at all times walking. Andrew continues to show his leadership skills in the troop through helping out younger scouts and applying skills he has learned in training and his Eagle Project. I was hoping an article could be placed in your paper before his Eagle Court at the end of September 2012. Please let me know if and when an article can be placed and if anymore information is needed. Thank you very much Luanne Vicnaire, Troop 604 Committee Chair | Stampede and Venturing? Yes!
