Monday Memo

Joseph Daniszewski
Scout Executive

Good day and welcome to our June 28th, 2010 Monday Memo

Flag Day Retirement Ceremony

On June 14th Flag Day, Pack 565 along with Girl Scout Troop 1740 performed a flag retirement ceremony at Big Bear Lake. They reitred 6 flags in a ceremony that had seven veterans in attendance. The veterans were very moved by the way the Scouts performed the ceremony. The Scouts opened it up for the crowd to participate and retire the Stripes and gave the blue field and stars to the veterans to retire.

Tribe of Wisumahi

The Tribe of Wisumahi was held at Camp Helendade this past week. Boys learned from Big B’loo (Rick Buchanan) and Big Bear (The Mountain Man Tom Cherry) about the ways of the Native Americans. They are taught about native skills, games and crafts while living in teepees in the forest.

At the beginning of the day, boys learned how to raise and give respect to our country’s flag. They then participate in various skill and craft activities and end the day at an evening campfire held by Big B’loo, to discuss the daily events, Indian stories and jokes of the day.

Some of the activities the boys participate in are beading, canoeing, archery, fishing and leathercraft. Etc. These boys learned how to settle their differences within their clan and how to support each other. In some clans, boys had challenges and they were able to over come them.

The program is a week long event and ends with a 3.6 mile hike called the Firebird Trail. This trail goes through camp Helendade and into the San Bernardino mountains down to Deep Creek. The Wisumahi experience is a teamwork and leadership program using Native American practices to help prepare the boys for the future when they will join the Boy Scout program.

Absolutely Brilliant

A palindrome is a word which reads the same backwards as forward . This video reads the exact opposite backwards as forward . Not only does it read the opposite, the meaning is the exact opposite. This is only a 1 minute, 44 second video and it is brilliant.   Make sure you read as well as listen...forward and backward.

This is a video that was submitted in a contest by a 20-year old.   The contest was titled "u @ 50" by  AARP. This video won second place. When they showed it, everyone in the room was awe-struck and broke into spontaneous applause.  So simple and yet so brilliant. Take a minute and watch it.

James E. West Fellowship Endowment Program

In 1910, James E. West became the first Chief Scout Executive of the Boy Scouts of America, and he served in that position for more than three decades. The James E. West Fellowship Award is available for gifts of $1,000 and up in cash or marketable securities to the Council Endowment Fund. The gift must be in addition to and not replace or diminish the donor’s annual Friends of Scouting support. Many individuals and corporations make these gifts either on behalf of someone else, such as in honor of an Eagle Scout, Silver Beaver recipient, a retirement, a special accomplishment, or anniversary or in memory of a special individual. If an institution is truly “the lengthened shadow of one man,” it is more than fitting that the BSA honor James E. West’s monumental contributions to Scouting in such a significant way.

The Executive Board invites you to support our California Inland Empire Council. We will print all members of our James E. West Fellowship and Heritage Society in upcoming Monday Memos.

"In summer, the song sings itself."  ~William Carlos Williams

The next issue of the Monday Memo will be Monday, July 12th

Enjoy the 4th of July and join Kate Smith in her stirring tribute, Click Here

In early 1940, Kate Smith, a fiercely patriotic American and the biggest star on radio, was deeply worried about her country. She asked Irving Berlin if he could give her a song that would re-ignite the spirit of American patriotism and faith.  He said he had a song that he had written in 1917, but never used it.  He said she could have it.

She sat at the piano & played it and realized how good it was.  She called Mr. Berlin and told him that she couldn't take this from him for nothing. So, they agreed that any money that would be made off the song would be donated to the Boy Scouts of America.

Thanks to Kate Smith and Irving Berlin, the Scouts have received millions of dollars in royalties. This clip is from the movie "You're in the Army Now". You will see a familiar face near the end that we are all very proud of. Frank Sinatra said that when Kate Smith, whom he considered the greatest singer of his age, first sang this song on the radio, a million guys got 'dust' in their eyes and had to wipe the tears the 'dust' caused.

If you can watch and listen without 'dust' getting in your eyes, you have no soul. Sit back and enjoy a Real Star.

Have a great Scouting week!
