101 Days of Scouting!
Calling all Friends of Scouting … today we launch 101 Days of Scouting! We'll be ticking off the 101 days to Thursday, July 21st, our target date to raise 101% of our goal of $940,900. We need to give every Scouting family, every Scouter, every supporter of Scouting in the California Inland Empire the opportunity to become a 2011 Friend of Scouting. We need to graciously ask for our friends generous support.
As we tick off the 101 days, let's think about the significance of 101 … hmmm, 101:
Do you remember the movie 101 Dalmatians? Pongo, the patriarch of the klan, called on the services of the " Twilight Bark " to find out what had happened to his puppies. All the dogs participated, their barks communicated where Cruela De Vil had hidden the puppies.
We need to get the word out!
Let's make our phone calls, write our emails, post on facebook, tweet and let everyone know how great Scouting is and how much we need their support! 101 days to go …

Scout Alley
Join us at "Scout Alley" for a fun saturday at the Grand Prix of Long Beach on April 16, 2011.
What is Scout Alley?
The Long Beach Area Council is the host Council of the BSA Motor Sports Indy Car Program in Southern California. We have a special area that we are using for FREE activities for all Scouts from all Councils on Saturday April 16th.
Scout Alley is located on Bay Street. Bay Street is located between Pine Ave and Aquarium Way. Bay Street is not in the racecourse area. You can reach the Alley without a ticket from Ocean and Cedar. Scout Alley is near Borders Book Store and the Cinemark Theaters.
The best parking is a the Pike Parking Structure or any other designated parking area. Remember races are taking place all day long so plan for parking accordingly. Consider the Blue Line.
Please have your Scouts wear their uniform. This is a great recruiting event. Bring a friend who might be considering joining the Scouting Program.
Scout Alley Activities
- See the NEW Boy Scout Grand Prix Car!
- Possibly meet our new driver Sebastien Bourdais and Dale Coyne (TBD based on race schedules)
- Race in REAL Soap Box Derby Cars from 10am – 8pm (every two hours)
- Pine Wood Derby Car Races from 1pm – 3pm (bring your own car and race your friends)
- Build A Model Car or Plane from 3pm – 5pm

Be Prepared to Respond to Excuses
As you organize Cub Scout packs and begin recruiting boys, be prepared to address the most frequent reasons for not joining. The following five reasons, based on the responses of parents of boys who never joined Cub Scouting, were cited as having a “major” or “somewhat of” an influence on the decision not to join.
Be sure to stress the points listed after each reason in your boy talk and be prepared to respond to similar explanations for not desiring to join.
Too busy with other things (55%)
Busy people make time for the most important things. Who is more important than your child? Plus, busy people working with other busy people make great things happen. Cub Scouting helps you and other parents by sharing family values, goals, aspirations, and friendship in a fun, adventuresome way.
Doesn’t have friends in Cub Scouts (41%)
Invite his friends to join with him. He will also make new friends in Cub Scouting. Plus, when families join together, they have more fun together.
Both the Cub Scout and his family will make new and lasting friends in Cub Scouting.
Wants to focus on sports (39%)
Sports are important, and he can play sports and participate in Cub Scouts. Many famous athletes participated in sports and Cub Scouts. He will also earn recognition in Cub Scouting for his sports activities.
Sports are excellent for developing the physical body; Cub Scouting develops the total body. Cub Scouting imparts skills a boy can use for his whole life, not just on the athletic field.
Requires too much from parents (33%)
Everyone makes time for the important things in life. Who is more important than your child? Anything valuable will take more time and effort to develop.
We stress the importance of everyone working together to make the task easier and less work for each person.
No nearby packs (29%)
Let’s start a pack in your community! What religious organization do you belong to? What community or civic organizations do you, a friend, or family member belong to? Let’s get a group of your son’s friends together and start a program so they, too, can experience the fun and adventure of Cub Scouting.

What Makes a Trained Leader
A direct contact Scout leader is considered fully trained and entitled to wear the Trained leader emblem when they have completed the following training courses required for their specific position.
Fast Start Training. Fast Start training is the first step for all new leaders and should be taken immediately after they register and before they meet with any youth members. The training is offered through MyScouting’s Online Learning Center , or it may be taken as part of an district or council training course.
This is Scouting. This Is Scouting picks up where Fast Start leaves off with six modules of training: The Mission of Scouting, Programs for All ages, Scouting Is Fun, Scouting in the Community, Keeping Our Youth Safe, and Scouting’s Legacy. The training takes about an hour and can be found on MyScouting’s Online Learning Center .
Position Specific Training. Leader position specific training is based on the leader’s position. These courses are taught by informed trainers who know how to engage groups and make learning fun. The Boy Scout Law defines how a Scout should live. Our favorite part of this law is about cleaning: "A Scout is clean. He helps keep his home and community clean." The Boy Scout Rule is simply to leave a place cleaner than you found it.
