Eagle Scout Recognition Dinner & NESA Outstanding Eagle Scout Award

The National Eagle Scout Association (NESA) Outstanding Eagle Scout Award (NOESA) is a prestigious recognition granted by the local council’s NESA committee to Eagle Scouts who have demonstrated outstanding achievement at the local, state, or regional level. Unlike the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award, which is a national award, the NOESA recognizes Eagle Scouts whose efforts have made a positive impact closer to home.

This year, the California Inland Empire Council recognized four individuals with this award:

                                         Michael Downs

                                           Bret Keesler

                                       B. Brent Ferguson

                                          Matthew Barth

Congratulations to them, and we thank them for their contributions to Scouting and the community.

In addition to the presentation of the NESA Outstanding Eagle Scout Award over 100 of the 532 Eagle Scouts from 2012 were in attendance at the dinner on March 15, 2013. An inspirational talk was given by Brigadier General Jeffrey K. Barnson, Mobilization Assistant to the Director of Strategic Plans, Requirements, and Programs, Headquarters Air Mobility Command, Scott Air Force Base, Illinois.

Glenn A. & Melinda W. Adams National Eagle Scout Service Project of the Year Award
The National Eagle Scout Association has established the Glenn A. and Melinda W. Adams National Eagle Scout Service Project of the Year Award to recognize valuable service of an exceptional nature by a Scout to a religious institution, a school, community, or other entity. The award recognizes the Scout for his Eagle Scout leadership service project, which is part of the requirements for earning the Eagle Scout Award. Each local council will choose a council-level winner, and from that pool, each region will pick a region-level winner. A national winner then will be selected from the four regional finalists. This year the California Inland Empire Council presented Kenneth Goode III with this award.

Snakes, Ropes, and a Race: It’s Adults vs. Scouts in Round 4 of ‘Are You Tougher?

tougher-e04-tease

We’ve seen nine Scouts-vs.-adults challenges this season on Are You Tougher Than a Boy Scout?, and the adults have lost all but two of them.

You could say it’s been one lashing after another.

But in Monday’s new episode, we’re in for a different kind of lashing — the diagonal, square, and round kind familiar to any Scout who’s earned Pioneering merit badge.

The Scouts should know the ropes, but how much will adults know about joining two poles together? Let’s find out together in the new episode, airing at 8 p.m./7 p.m. Central on Monday on the National Geographic Channel.

We’ll see a fresh group of adults go toe-to-toe against three of the best-and-brightest Boy Scouts around. And, as the promo photo above indicates, we’ll see snakes. (Why did it have to be snakes?) Read More....

BSA Contingent Nominations

We are building up a pool of highly qualified individuals (Scouts/Leaders) that can represent the BSA at different international Scouting functions. Thus, we would like each council International Representative (IR) to identify and nominate at least one person from your council to the National BSA International Department. Please use this link for nomination forms: http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/International/BSAContingent.aspx

Our intention is to form BSA contingents that represent  geographical diversity from the USA. Nominees from the same unit or the same council may not be selected for the same trip. However, they still gain opportunities to participate in one of the international trips in the future.

Besides the World Scout Moot in Canada in 2013 that we are sending a contingent to this summer, we are also looking forward to forming a contingent for Georgia’s (former republic of the Soviet Union) National Jamboree, Aug 6-16 2013. Let’s nominate our Scouts/Leaders to be part of the best BSA representation to the world.

Any CIEC Scouter who wishes to improve his/her chance at being selected for a leadership or staff position to a World Jamboree (2015-Japan or 2019-USA) needs to add international events and leadership roles to his/her Scouting resume.  Please submit the requisite form to Mike Goldware, CIEC IR and CIEC ISC Chair at magoldware@aol.com.

Region is Flush with Saints

By Mark Muckenfuss Staff Writer

We live among the saints. It should be no surprise, since the first Europeans who rambled through our region were often Franciscan priests. They named their missions for their saints, and the local landscape often was tagged with similar titles.

And with the newly elected Pope Francis and papal fever still commanding plenty of media attention, not to mention interest among Catholics, it seems like a fitting time to take a look at the martyrs and miracle workers connected, at least by name, with the Inland Empire.

Saint Bernardine, Saint Anthony, Saint Anne, Saint Gorgonius and Saint Hyacinth are a few of the long-gone church devotees who dominate our terrain. In the hands of the Franciscans, they became San Bernardino, San Antonio, Santa Ana, San Gorgonio and San Jacinto, respectively.

So who were these people whose names we so often invoke but about whom few of us probably know much, if anything? Here is a quick primer: Read More.....
