Monday Memo

Joseph Daniszewski
Scout Executive

Good day and welcome to our March 15th Monday Memo

Helping our friends in Chile

A number of you have been asking whether Scouting has plans for a Chilean earthquake relief effort, similar to the assistance we have been providing to Haiti.

I encourage those who want to lend a hand to recovery efforts in Chile to provide financial support?that?s where you can have the most impact. That support should be directed to agencies like the American Red Cross, who have the talent and resources to respond to disasters such as we have seen in Haiti, and now Chile.

I know that many of you have units conducting fund-raisers and taking on other projects to provide assistance, and that?s wonderful to see and hear about. I know the people in those stricken regions greatly appreciate any help you can offer.

Thanks, Chief Scout Executive Bob Mazzuca

JFK ask for a raise in his allowance for Scouting

John Fitzgerald Francis Kennedy, President of the United States, was a Scout in Troop 2 in the Bronxville, NY rom 1929 to 1931. This letter was written when he was 12 years old in 1929.

A Plea for a raise By Jack Kennedy Dedicated to my Mr. J. P. Kennedy

Chapter I

My recent allowance is 40?. This I used for areoplanes and other playthings of child- hood but now I am a scout and I put away my childish things. Before I would spend 20? of my ?.40 allowance and In five minutes I would have empty pockets and nothing to gain and 20? to lose. When I a a scout I have to buy canteens, haversacks, blankets, searchlidgs [searchlights] poncho things that will last for years and I can always use it while I cant use a cholcalote marshmellow sunday with vanilla ice cream and so I put in my plea for a raise of thirty cents for me to buy scout things and pay my own way more around.

Geocaching Merit Badge Final Requirements

We are pleased to release the attached, final requirements for the Geocaching Merit Badge. This merit badge is a natural extension of the navigational components of Boy Scout rank advancements and offers the opportunity for Scouts to learn the latest in digital tools to extend that knowledge in a fun, active outdoor experience.

The merit badge emblem and pamphlet are still under development. We will update you when those items are finalized and we have a handle on when they are anticipated to be in local council service centers. Once we can see that timing more clearly, we will establish the earn date so advancement can be entered. Click Here

District Pack & Troop Highlights

Pack 310 Three Peaks

On Saturday, February 27th at the Blue & Gold Dinner We had 9 boys earn their Arrow of Light. The boys really seemed to enjoy the Star Wars ceremony we put on for them. Complete with Darth Vader and OB and everyone held their own mini light saber.

Pack & Troop 310 Three Peaks

On March 6th the units headed on out on a desert adventure to hunt for Geodes about 30 miles south of Blythe. They did this last year and everyone had so much fun they had to do it again. If any other units are interested in setting up their own geode hunt or gold mining trip they can contact our Guide, Craig Wiita at wiitas@aol.com or 760-424-6504. This is a great way for the scouts to earn their geology beltloop and pin or their geology merit badge.

Pack 695 Three Peaks

There are several photos from our Presidents Day outing to the Nixon Library in Yorba Linda where our Cub's got to see Nixon's Helicopter and meet several "Presidents" including Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. There are also pictures from our Blue and Gold dinner and our service project which was planting trees for the Perris Cemetery. We have been busy but looks like we are going to have a fun 2010 celebrating 100 years of Scouting.

Pack 574 High Desert District

The boys seem to be having a great time at the Fishing Derby. Also look like they had a pretty good catch, good job!

Explorer Post Renewals Online

How does a post leader access Explorer Renewal?
The leader must create a MyParticipation account. MyParticipation is an account that gives a leader access to business tools depending on the leader's role. A member ID is required.

The post agrees on which adult will serve as the renewal processor and this person completes the renewal and submits it.

What other tools can a post leader use with a MyParticipation account?
Explorer Renewal and Outing Permits are the two systems available via MyParticipation. Post adult leaders who serve in the committee chairman, committee member, Exploring advisor, or associate advisor positions will have access to both online applications.

What about online training?
Leaders can take several e-learning courses from MyParticipation, including Safe Swim Defense, Safety Afloat, Weather Hazards, Youth Protection Training (Exploring), and Explorer Advisor Basic Leader Training.

The Safety First Learning for Life Guidelines can be accessed from Outing Permits.

How can leaders get help with their MyParticipation accounts?
At the MyParticipation login page is a link to Frequently Asked Questions for leaders. For technical issuescreating a MyParticipation account, e-mail myparticipation@learningforlife.org.

What if they need help with Explorer Renewals?
Online help is available for both Explorer Renewal and Outing Permits to explain how to complete and submit information to the LFL office.
