San Bernardino Shooting: A Salute to our Fallen Scouters

Mike Wetzel was the Treasurer and Committee Member for Troop 89.

His son Andrew (age 14) was in Den 1, Pack 89 and he bridged to Troop 89. Mike was a man who loved his children and showed it through his involvement  in their activities such as Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, coaching soccer and hikes around Lake Gregory. His kind spirit and playful nature will be missed by those who knew him.

Kim Walker, Committee Chair, Troop 89

Sierra Clayborn was a member of Venture Crew 283 of the Crest Baptist Fellowship in 2007.

We pray for all the deceased, their families and friends. We will always remember.

Recognizing a True American Hero and Scouter!

The California Inland Empire Council, BSA takes great pride to recognize and honor a long time Scouter and Pearl Harbor survivor. Dr. Paul Loefke has been a Scouter for 60 years. His decades of service to Scouting include having earned the Eagle Scout rank in the USA and in the Philippines. As an adult Dr. Loefke was a Scoutmaster for 30 years, Camp Director, Council Vice President and a District Chairman among many his many roles of Scouting service.

On December 7th, 1941 Dr. Loefke, then a young Naval pilot was present during the engagement at Pear Harbor, Hawaii. He survived that fateful day and continued to serve his country in several other conflicts of the war in the Pacific and retired from the Navy after a very long and distinguished career.

This past December 7th,  the 74th anniversary of Pearl Harbor I was joined by his wife Mrs. Nina Loefke, his son Mr. Jeff Loefke, his daughter Mrs. Valerie Sevy, Mr. Ham, President of Temecula LDS Stake a close family friend, Mr. Ricci Dula, Assistant Scout Executive and Mr. Matt Flanagan, Council Commissioner to honor Dr. Loefke at his home in Temecula. Dr. Loefke regaled us with stories of where he had served and the conflicts he was involved in. These are the stories of legend. The kind books and movies are made from. Dr. Loefke is truly an American hero.

His service to Scouting is just as storied and his list of achievements and awards are just as impressive as his military career. Among his many accolades, Dr. Loefke is a Silver Beaver recipient as well as being a recipient of the Gold Usa award from the Boy Scouts of the Philippines. It was a privilege to meet and speak with Dr. Loefke and his family.

Scott "Mac" McLeod, Council President CIEC

UCI COSMOS Astronomy & Astrophysics for High School Students

Dear Friends of the UCI Observatory,

I'm writing to you because you're on the email list for notices about the our events, and I thought some of you might be interested in our summer astronomy program for talented high school students.

As part of the UCI COSMOS program, we teach Astronomy & Astrophysics to 25 high school students each summer. For four weeks, the students live in the dorms, take classes in physics and astronomy, and do computer labs in astrophysics.
Plus they get to use UCI Observatory telescopes to do their own research project. Its a lot of fun and the students learn a lot that is not offered in most high school curricula.

Many students are given financial aid in order to attend so don't let that stop anyone from applying. Applications involve writing two short essays, submitting a transcript and getting letters of recommendation from teachers. Therefore its good to start thinking about applying around the winter holidays.

For more information, www.cosmos.uci.edu Feel free to pass this along to interested students.

2016 NYLT Potential Staff

NYLT is one of the best experiences Scouting offers to turn our Scouts into Leaders. Next year the CIEC will be offering two opportunities for our Scouts to participate in this program. But first we need NYLT trained youth and Woodbadge trained adults to help staff the courses. Please reach out to your Troops and Crews and let the qualified individuals know that we are having a Meet & Greet Saturday January 9, 2016 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 350 S Wabash Ave., Redlands, CA 92374 from 1:00-5:00pm.

Here you will meet the key staff and interact with others so we can form the best teams for each course. The courses will be June 13-18 and August 1-6. This is YOUR opportunity to share all the training you have received with all the future leaders in our council. NYLT/Foxfire Staff Application

Candle Wreath Prayer

God of love, Father of all,
the darkness that covered the earth
has given way to the bright dawn of your Word made flesh.
Make us a people of this light.
Make us faithful to your Word
