Varsity Turkey Shoot 2012

The 17th Annual Varsity Scout Turkey Shoot took place on Nov 2/3, 2012 at Camp Emerson in the high adventure area by Fort Emerson. The event was attended by 30 Varsity Scouts and adult leaders. The service project this year was to work on the fort where the teams did a combined 120 hrs of service to the camp. By working on the fort the Varsity Scouts learned carpentry skills, team work skills, plus learning how to dig holes and stand telephone poles. The attendees cleaned up building materials that people had previously removed from the fort area. The teams worked on securing the fletchings on the fort, replacing fence poles with telephone poles and attaching more fletchings on the west wall.  In the afternoon the Varsity Scouts competed in Black powder shooting, Archery, and Hawk / Knife throwing. Prizes earned during the completion included patch knives made with deer antlers, medicine bags, wood whistles, and a Turkey Shoot patch. Renewed wows: Check out the changes in the November Cubcast

Spring may be the season of renewal, but fall’s when Cub Scout packs hit the reset button for the year.

Which is also the perfect time for Cubcast to do the same. As I mentioned in August, the podcast has been completely reimagined, with your help, and the November 2012 episode is the result of that revamp. If you ask me, it’s a hit. The new hosts bring a fresh energy and a sense of authority to the informative, 10-minute episode. And the shout-out to my blog makes it even sweeter!

The subject matter for this month’s episode is about renewal, too — as in the unit charter renewal process, a timely reminder this time of year.

Who are the new hosts? Meet Regional Operations Manager (and past leader of the Cub Scout Division) Sam Thompson. He’s joined at the microphone by Cub Scout volunteer extraordinaire Janet Griffin. This month, the two chat with Terrie Wilder, assistant council commissioner for charter renewal for the Mount Baker (Wash.) Area Council. Listen to the November 2012 Cubcast or catch up with past episodes by Clicking Here.

Boy Scout Leaders, Listen Up!

Cubcast is great for pack and den leaders, but what about Boy Scout volunteers?

Just wait — ScoutCast will air Jan. 1.

Think of it as a roundtable or after-hours discussion. Sure, we all know how to teach kids about cooking over a campfire or tying a sheepshank, but ScoutCast will focus on topics like anger management, bullying, or dealing with kids with ADHD or hyperactivity.

I’m thinking it’s something Boy Scout leaders won’t want to miss.

National Youth Protection Efforts

Last Thursday and Friday we hosted a National Youth Protection Symposium in Atlanta. Michael Johnson, our Youth Protection director and his team of volunteers have been working on this symposium for over a year.  They have assembled national experts to speak on child abuse, such as the executive director of the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children, Michael Haney; executive director of training and outlook at the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, Kristen Anderson; and the director of the Crimes Against Children Research Center, Dr. David Finkelhor.

We invited the top leadership of national nonprofit youth-serving organizations to discuss the subject of child sexual abuse prevention. Some of the attending organizations are Boys & Girls Clubs of America, the YMCA of the USA, the United Methodist Church, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. The purpose is for everyone to share ideas on best practices and collectively find more effective ways to address this issue.

Keep in mind that this effort is not a reaction to recent press. As I said earlier, it has been in the planning stages for over a year. For more information about this symposium, check out our website at www.nationalyouthprotectionsymposium.org. There will be a summary report available afterward as well as an article in Scout Wire.

The other initiative that we have been working on is establishing Youth Protection champions at every level of the BSA, be it at the region, area, council, district or unit. These volunteer champions will provide support and oversight of the administration and delivery of our Youth Protection program to the field through National Council operations and through region, area, council, district and unit organizations. Thanks to Dr. James S. Wilson, National Executive Board member, for leading this effort. You will be hearing more about this initiative in the coming months.

Discover Pre-Paid Scout Cards Now Available!

We're proud to announce that the Boy Scouts of America Discover(r) Prepaid Card is now available. You may get your Scout a BSA Discover Prepaid Card today by clicking on the Order Now button at www.ScoutsAreThrifty.com.

With the Scout Prepaid Card, parents will be teaching their Scout how to manage money wisely. This is NOT a credit card, but a prepaid, reloadable card that can be replenished from any bank account. It's a great way for Scouts to manage their daily spending, and it's safer and more convenient than carrying cash. Scouts will show their support of our iconic organization while learning important lessons of money management. Cardholders will have access to a Financial Education section as well as a Merit Badge section all designed to help Scouts become financially educated while earning badges with financial components.

Please help us get the word out by forwarding this email to colleagues, friends, and family. You may also access "spread the word" tools at www.Scouting.org/BSAprepaid, where you'll find template emails, social media posts, fliers, and more for parents, volunteers, and supporters to access.

Also, be on the lookout for more information regarding the new Boy Scouts of America Credit Card. In addition to all of the existing rewards and benefits Discover offers, this card will offer a Scouts Rewards section where cardholders may donate their points to a council or purchase Scout Shop products with their points.

This card will be available on November 15, 2012, for anyone to apply, so visit www.BoyScoutCreditCard.com and stay tuned for additional information as this date approaches.

Modernization and Expansion of Camp Emerson Summer Camp Tents and Platforms

The Cahuilla Lodge Chief, Ian McLeod, established the expansion and modernization replacement program of Camp Emerson Summer Camp platforms, frames new cabin canvas tents as his number one goal for 2013.  After almost one year of research and exploration, a sturdy steel tent platform, structure and canvas design has been selected and proposed to the Order of the Arrow Staff Adviser and Supreme Chief of the Fire as a recommended design to replace aged existing summer camp platform tents.  With the acceptance of this design, the Cahuilla Lodge Order of the Arrow hopes to have the CIEC Council officially accept the tent platform, frame and canvas design that can be used to standardized both the replacement of existing tents as well as expand the summer camp housing capacity of Camp Emerson for many, many years to come.

The Chief and his LEC are planning to generate an authorization to have the Lodge financially support between four to six tents which will enhance the purchase capability of a Council grant of $5,000 allowing the initial first purchase of nine to eleven tents.   The Lode hopes to have the tent modernization and expansion plan become an annual goal for the Lodge to support our camp with a few new tents annually.  The long term Lodge goal is to eventually replace all Camp Emerson existing summer camp tents as well as additional for expansion.

The replacement of existing summer camp tent platforms and frames is viewed by the Lodge as a top priority for the camp.  Many of the existing wooden frames are beyond their useful life and are requiring substantial repair annually by the O.A. during their May Ordeal.  Therefore, the Lodge decided to place the project as the subject project for their annual National O.A. Service Grant request.  Should the Cahuilla Lodge be accepted for choice project, the award would generate another $18,000 for this project and allow for a quick stimulus for replacement of tents immediately.  The new design will enhance the quality and strength of the frames allowing for many, many years of use by our camp.  The modernization of the tents will add a tremendous first appeal impression to our fellow scouters.

The Cahuilla Lodge Chief, his Lodge Executive Committee and our Lodge Arrowman all take extreme pride in kicking off this major project for our Council and camp.
